Lacrosse Program Returns to San Miguel School

San Miguel School’s new lacrosse team is gearing up for their first game in April.

Team captains Brian L. and Jose S. fight for a ground ball.

The team, founded by math and science teacher Megan Sibree, began practicing together at the end of February.

“I started the team because I think sports are essential to the well-being of students, especially for middle school boys,” Sibree explained. “Lacrosse is a sport that allows them to be physical and release energy in a healthy, productive way.”

Sibree says she has been most impressed with the grit the boys have demonstrated in the face of learning a new sport.

“Lacrosse is not an easy sport to pick up – learning to catch and throw with a lacrosse stick takes time and dedication,” she said. “Their willingness to listen and learn has been really impressive.”

One of the two team captains, 8th-grader Brian L., said he has encouraged his teammates to embody those qualities of persistence and commitment.

“At San Miguel we are taught the importance of having patience, showing grit, and always trying your best,” he explains. “Out of the classroom and on the field we should still maintain that growth mindset and encourage others to do the same throughout practices and games.”

Co-captain 6th-grader Jose S. echoed Brian’s sentiments, and noted the importance of being a team player.

This isn’t the first time San Miguel has had a lacrosse team. In fact, Alvin Zepeda ’06, a San Miguel alumnus and now the school’s admissions, finance, and operations manager, was a member of the team in 2006 when he was a San Miguel student. Former San Miguel teacher and current San Miguel board member Glenn Benjamin was the coach.

The team will face off against Washington Jesuit Academy on April 24 at 2:30 p.m. at Turkey Thicket Rec Center in Washington, D.C.
