Hispanic Heritage Foundation Brings Unique Minecraft Game to San Miguel School

San Miguel students marked Computer Science Education Week by playing LatinExplorers 2, a computer game collaboration between Minecraft Education and the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, on December 15. Minecraft senior program manager Laylah Bulman guided students through the demo version of the game, which “highlights three powerful Latina trailblazers as characters in the game and introduces them to our young players and changemakers.”

Hispanic Heritage Foundation President and CEO Antonio Tijerino accompanied the group through the demo. Tijerino first spoke about the game at San Miguel School when he addressed the student body earlier this year, during which he shared his commitment to encouraging young people to understand the value of their identity and use their voices.

As they played LatinExplorers 2, about thirty-five students across sixth, seventh, and eighth grade explored the journeys of musician Gloria Estefan, astronaut Dr. Ellen Ochoa, and Monica Ramirez, an advocate for farmers' and immigrants’ rights. One student shared, “My favorite part was when I got to meet Ellen Ochoa because it showed me how her life was as an astronaut, what she did in order to become an astronaut, and how she trained.”
