San Miguel Students Show Big Hearts in Small Change

San Miguel students put the “fun” in FUNdraising as they gather around to watch a beloved teacher lose(win?) the Pi Day challenge.

In a heartwarming display of generosity, the students of San Miguel School have once again proven that big impacts can come from small gestures. This spring, our young scholars embarked on a spirited fundraising campaign, aptly named "Penny Wars," raising an impressive $788 for the LaSalle Educational Center in Homestead, Florida.

The LaSalle Educational Center, a Lasallian Catholic school serving low-income and agricultural families in the South Dade Community, is just beginning its journey as a full-fledged school after a decade of operating as a before and after-school educational hub. San Miguel School takes pride in contributing to this new chapter in LaSalle's story, embodying the spirit of community support fundamental to the Lasallian tradition.

Led by the enthusiastic Assistant Principal, Mr. Vera, our students devised a clever and engaging fundraising strategy. The "Penny Wars" campaign pitted classes against each other in a friendly competition, with the "losing" teacher - whose students raised the most money - facing a deliciously fun consequence: a pie in the face on Pi Day, March 14th. This creative approach motivated students to contribute and fostered a sense of camaraderie and fun among the entire school community.

Ms. Babcock graciously receives a pie to the face as her students raised the most money during the Penny Wars challenge.

What makes this achievement particularly remarkable is the context from which it springs. Many of our students come from low income backgrounds themselves, yet they embody the Lasallian virtue of Generosity with unwavering commitment. Through their daily Miguel classes, which focus on faith formation and the practical application of Lasallian virtues, our boys have learned that true wealth lies not in what one has but in what one gives.

The success of this fundraising effort goes beyond the monetary value. It showcases San Miguel's holistic education, nurturing academic excellence, character, compassion, and community spirit. From the students' organizational skills to the teachers' good-humored participation, every aspect of this campaign reflects the values we hold dear.

As we celebrate this accomplishment, we're reminded of the words from LaSalle Educational Center's thank-you letter: "Your contribution plays a pivotal role in our mission to provide quality education and support to our students." At San Miguel, we're not just teaching subjects; we're shaping futures and nurturing hearts that beat with generosity and purpose. Our Penny Wars may have dealt in small change, but the impact - both on our students and those they've helped - is immeasurable.
