Business Leader Lee Wang Encourages San Miguel Students to Work Hard, Stay Resilient
Lee Wang, Co-Founder, President and Chief Operating Officer of The Knot Worldwide, encouraged San Miguel students on March 23 to stay resilient and make their own luck to achieve success.
Wang spoke about his upbringing in Los Angeles as a first-generation immigrant. He told students about the journey of his education and career, from studying engineering at Cornell University to co-founding Blackboard Inc., all the way through to his work at The Knot today.
He shared that if you consider the “secret sauce” of success like Wang’s to be luck, then “luck equates to preparation, attitude, and action.”
Wang discussed the importance of completing studies, opening yourself to growth, and building relationships. He particularly advised students to hone their communications skills by taking advantage of opportunities like joining the debate team or taking a sales job.
“Learn to talk. Learn to communicate. Learn to influence…The number one criteria for advancement in the business world is the ability to communicate.”
Wang’s story and advice resonated with the young men at San Miguel School. Many could relate to his background as an immigrant working hard in school to prepare for career success. One eighth grade student noted that he felt motivated to heed Wang’s advice to “double down” on a passion for which he has a talent. Another shared that he was inspired by Wang’s journey through adversity: “He persevered. He never gave up.”
