San Miguel Students Shine at 2023 STEM Fair Expo

Energy was high through the halls of San Miguel School as students presented the results of their science experiments to teachers, parents, and supporters at the 2023 STEM Fair Expo on April 19.

Over the course of the third quarter, each student designed, tested, analyzed, and presented a project that uses the scientific methods to solve a problem of his choice. The top 20 projects were featured at the Expo, where three winners were determined by the evening’s attendees

Angel, an eighth grade student who came in third place, determined which type of salt was the most effective at melting snow. Seventh grade student Luis, the runner-up, analyzed the advantages of different prosthetic hands.

First place was awarded to another seventh grade student, Lander. Lander investigated how the Tesla principle affects energy usage. He compared the amount of energy needed to illuminate three different light bulbs when powered by a traditional electrical outlet versus a Tesla coil. On the evening of the presentation, he demonstrated his findings for all to see.

Students’ presentations, many featuring recreations of their experiments, wowed spectators. Assistant Principal Kyle Fahsel noted, “The students spoke extensively and with precision about their projects.” Principal David Palank added, “I was impressed by the academic language they all used throughout! Obviously the credit goes to the STEAM team [of teachers] for emphasizing its importance in presenting. Great job all around!”
