For two months leading up to the competition, students met virtually twice a week with team coaches (and San Miguel teachers) Megan Sibree and Jackie Guevara to prepare for the competition. The practice sessions allowed the students to learn material in preparation for the live Science Bowl competition in March.

San Miguel competed against local middle schools by answering college-level questions in Jeopardy!-style Zoom meetings.

The student participants were: Team Captain Adair S. (6), Jaime M. (6), Daniel O. (6), Byron G. (8), and Jesus G. (8). Marcelo M. (7) also attended practices in preparation to join the team next year.

Although the San Miguel team did not advance past the final round, Coach Sibree said she was excited to build on this year’s momentum to compete in the Science Bowl next year.

“Our boys were awesome and tackled some really difficult, high level questions,” Sibree said. “They showed perseverance during a few difficult rounds. I am so proud!”
